Los Roques Scuba Diving

diver-coral-5 The best kept secret, a virgin paradise called the Archipelago of Los Roques, where time has stopped and the natural beauty of the islands, keys and lagoons creates special magic that captivates everyoneLocated at 130 Km north of the central coast of Venezuela, in the Caribbean Sea,

emerges from the deep blue sea waters, the archipelago of Los Roques.  The archipelago is an extensive coral atoll that spans 36 km east to west and 24.6 km north to south.  This marine jewel is composed of 50 islands, about 292 keys, and extensive coral reefs covering an area of 221,120 square kilometers.  Some of the keys emerge only during low tide.

The sea of Los Roques vibrates with life and beauty. Its clear waters, its underwater diversity, ranging from coral reefs and their abundant sea life to the rocky and sandy bottoms and the mangroves, allows for a wide variety of marine activities, such as diving, snorkeling, bottom fishing and world famous bone fishing.

Diving in Los Roques is the very essence of what a diving adventure should be, due to the special characteristics of this paradise, with an average water temperature of 27 degrees Celsius year-round, and visibility between 10 and 30 meters. Scuba divers enjoy one of the best coral reefs in the Caribbean, with the mountains of coral, the vast marine vegetation and the colorful fauna that explodes before their eyes in a kaleidoscope of life.

Reef fish such as groupers, snappers, parrot fish and turtles can be seen, while barracudas cruise in precise formation or stingrays lurk on the white sandy bottom.  Visible as well, is the occasional visit from a reef shark, a hammerhead or the gentle whale shark.

Near El Gran Roque  there are a number of great dive sites, such as La Buceadora, Madriski, La Ahogada the well known La Guasa.  These dives unlike madriski, which is a garden reef, are mostly rock formation with abundant marine life and great visibility.

At the south end of the islands we find a barrier reef that runs from Las Gatas in Boca de Cote, to Salt Key at the extreme west of the barrier.  This reef covers 32 Kilometers of fantastic reef drops, with very uniform characteristics.  This is an area with about 50 different pristine diving sites.

Also, 60% of the archipelago is under full environmental protection, which means that people are not allowed there.  This level of protection has supported the reproduction of many birds and marine species, almost extinct elsewhere, as well as the impeccable condition of the coral reefs.

Diving at the National Park with Ecobuzos

Ecobuzos has daily departures to different dive sites in the park, they are carried out around 8:30 am to 2:00 pm approximately. Also on special request, we can make dives to sites that normally are not in our itinerary. Also, do night dives at the request of the advanced divers and certified for this type of activity.

NOTE: Whenever we go to the southern barrier reef, we do two dives there, given the distance and the logistics involved.  When diving in the area close to Gran Roque, during the intermediate time before the second dive, we take our guests to nearby beaches such as Francisqui or Madrisqui.
