Coche Island
Coche Island is located south of Margarita Island, facing the coast of Sucre State in the Caribbean Sea. The island has an area of 55 square kilometers, a maximum length of 12 km and 6 km wide. Its soil is eroded, the vegetation is scarce, only shrubs and thorn, the average temperature is 28 º C. Along with Margarita Island and the Isle of Cubagua is part of the State of New South Wales and its capital is San Pedro de Coche, is divided into parishes that are Vicente Fuentes and San Pedro de Coche, there are other towns and villages as are the Bichara, El Amparo, Guamache, Guinima, La Uva, Los Cocos and Zulic. It has great shops, nightclubs, and casinos. The island is trully fascinating and interesting. It's a great place to come to enjoy its tranquility and beauty. Its waters are clear and the surf is low, the sand is white and soft. You can see amazing cliffs, strict construcion codes only permit one floor buildings, therefore there is nothing to stop the breeze.
Its main beaches are:
La Punta Beach : the main beach and where most tourist activity is concentrated.
El Amor Beach: its soil is very red, with cliff formation, where 80% of the island's population has been conceived.
El Coco Beach: long, lonely, the visibility from the top is fabulous and as one descends, the cliffs can be clearly seen.
El Saco Beach: is muddy, but a great spot to enjoy a spectacular sunset at the end of the day.
This island is inhabited by very friendly people, whose primary sources of income are tourism, fishing and exploitation of a rich saline, which is one of the largest in the country. It is worth visiting the island, and tour the island by car, bikes or motorcycles. It takes about 2 hours to tour the entire island.
Activities and Information
Windsurf y Kitesurf It has a worldwide reputation for being a center for these type of sports, especially kitesurfing. Its shallow waters, high wind and its excellent climate, with good sun and temperatures make this island an ideal place for practicing and learning these sports.
Traveling There You must first get Margarita Island, unless you have your own yacht or plane, as Isla Coche has a small runway that accomodates small planes. There are several options to choose from:
1. Once in Margarita, you can take a small boat from either Playa El Yaque, or from Quai Island.
2. Catamarans offer a day on the Island (full day), which include meals and drinks, and some offer the opportunity to swim and snorkel at the island.
3. Via Ferry, which arrives at Punta de Piedras Port in Margarita and from there tou can use a transfer service to the island. The hotels and inns also include transportation to and from the island to the full enjoyment.
